How do Ice Eaters Work?

ice-eater-p1000The concept behind the Ice Eater is to maintain movement of water as moving water does not freeze. The Ice Eater is used to protect boats, docks, piers, and marinas from ice and ice damage. Ice can freeze, twist, and pull the dock and pilings out of the ground without protection from Ice Eaters.

To perform its duties the Ice Eater’s propellers draw warmer subsurface water through a Venturi-styled housing and deflects it to the surface. By creating a constant circulation of the warmer subsurface water, the Ice Eater prevents further ice formation and melts existing ice.

Ice Eater units come fully assembled and installation takes minutes. Ice Eaters are typically set up between 2 and 4 feet below the surface of the water. We recommend to start running ice eaters before the ice has fully formed, at which point the Ice Eater is most effective.

When Do I need Ice Eater Repair?

Ice Eaters are generally reliable and should offer years of trustworthy performance, however over time and after exposure and neglect Ice Eaters can develop problems like any other piece of equipment. What indicators can you look for to identify a failing Ice Eater?

  • Unresponsive: Nothing happens when you turn on the Ice Eater. A seized motor is one of the most common reports by customers of failed Ice Eaters. This could be caused by any number of issues. Fortunately this is fixable, please use our contact form below for more information.
  • Motor Whine: The Ice Eater runs, but you hear a hum or whine during operation. This could be an indication the Ice Eater is nearing failure and you should consider having it serviced immediately.
  • Intermittent Operation: If the Ice Eater works intermittently this bears further evaluation. Are the weather conditions below freezing? If so, the Ice Eater could be dealing with components affected by the temperature, thus impeding operation. If temperatures are above freezing, you could be dealing with a problem in the Ice Eater circuitry or wiring. Please use our contact form below for additional assistance.
  • Broken or Damaged Blades: If the blades of your Ice Eater are damaged, it is unsafe to continue operation and it is recommended to replace them before further operation. You may reach out to the Aquatic Supply Center for assistance in Ice Eater damage or Ice Eater blade repair.
  • Ice Eater runs, but does not keep ice away from boat or dock: You may have a damaged blade or an undersized model for your application. Bearon and Powerhouse Ice Eaters models come in various sizes depending on application. If your Ice Eater runs but is unable to keep your boat or dock from icing over, it’s possible you need an upgrade to a larger unit. If you have evaluated your Ice Eater and can confirm your propeller is spinning and the blade is not broken, head over to our Ice Eater page and consider an upgrade.
